Languages of our Nation Blocks
Languages of our Nation Blocks
26 wooden toy blocks.
Learning First Nations languages supports First Nations and non First Nation students to develop a strong sense of identity, pride and self-esteem that strengthens well-being and engagement.
First Nations language programs build respect for First Nations histories, cultures, people, knowledge and experiences amongst students and their families, school staff, and the broader community.
There are numerous First Nations languages and dialects, many of which are endangered. An endangered language is one that is at risk of falling out of use, generally because it has few surviving speakers. If it loses all of its native speakers, it becomes an extinct language.
In Australia there are more than 250 Indigenous languages including around 800 dialects. Languages are living things that connect people to Country, culture and ancestors. We have chosen to represent languages throughout Australia.
Our blocks contain approved words for sharing and our supplier has developed them in consultation with First Nations Land Councils.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters, and special acknowledgment to the custodians of the languages that are used on our blocks: Tiwi, Pintupi, Gudjal, Noongar, Bunganditj, Awabakal.
